Equipment
- Large pot
- Potato peeler
- Colander
- Potato masher or hand mixer
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups & spoons
Ingredients
- 2 lbs potatoes (900 g) Yukon Gold or Russet recommended
- ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick, softened)
- ¾ cup whole milk (or heavy cream for richer flavor)
- 2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper optional
- 2 cloves roasted garlic or 2 tbsp sour cream for extra flavor Optional
Instructions
- Prepare potatoes: Peel and cut potatoes into evenly sized chunks.
- Boil: Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add 1 tsp salt. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).
- Drain: Drain potatoes well in a colander.
- Mash: Return potatoes to the pot. Add butter and mash until smooth.
- Add milk: Gradually pour in warm milk (or cream), stirring until creamy and fluffy.
- Season: Add remaining salt and black pepper to taste.
- Serve: Transfer to a serving bowl. Garnish with melted butter, chives, or parsley if desired.
Notes
- Warm milk (not cold) blends better with the potatoes for a creamier texture.
- Avoid over-mixing with an electric mixer, as potatoes can turn gluey.
- Yukon Golds give a buttery flavor, while Russets are lighter and fluffier.
